Mental health is obviously one of those things that are important at every stage of life. It is certainly true that you will need to think about it when you are a parent, as your children have mental health needs just like everyone else. One of the main things to think about here is how you are going to help encourage good mental health in your kids. As it happens, there are a few things in particular that you might want to try towards that end, so let’s take a look at what they are right now.

Talk Openly

This is probably the easiest, simplest thing you can do to help your kids with their mental health in general. Being open in your communication shows them that this is an okay way to be, and that is something that is always going to be appreciated overall. Make sure that you make it the norm at home to talk about your feelings. If you can do that, you will probably find that your children respond in kind and start talking about their mental health more and more, which can be incredibly useful. So talk more and you should find it really helps both them and you.

Use Spirituality & Religion

Although not everyone goes for this, many people do feel that it is important and useful to have spirituality or religion to turn to when things get tough. There is actually plenty that religion can do to help with this. For example, as a Jewish woman in an interfaith marriage, I’m aware of scripture about mental health in the Bible and Torah that can support you.

I’m not as well-versed in other religions but I love learning about other cultures and beliefs. If you have and are willing to share how your faith teaches about mental health, please feel free to email me and let me know!

As a yoga teacher, I can recommend the use of spiritual acts like meditation, chanting, and breathwork. These are all great grounding activities that are easily available to do with your kids, if you want to, and if it is something that they tend to respond well to. It might really help them a lot now and in the future.

Keep Them Physically Healthy

In general, the better a person’s physical health is, the better their mental health is too. They work together in this fashion. So if you want your kids to be healthy in the mind, you should make sure that they are healthy physically as well. That is obviously something that you have direct influence over, especially when it comes to diet and exercise for example. Make sure that you are prioritizing these especially when your kids seem to be struggling emotionally or mentally as well.

Teach Self-Care

Everyone needs to learn how to care for themselves, and if your kids are able to do this right then it should mean that they are going to feel a lot better about their own mental health on the whole. Good self-care is all about how you view yourself and what you do to take care of yourself. This is therefore something that you might want to try and teach them as early on as possible. It could make a huge difference to how strong their mind and mental wellbeing is on the whole.
