Have you ever heard the phrase: HURT PEOPL Have you ever heard the phrase:

HURT PEOPLE HURT PEOPLE?

Think about every time you've gotten into an argument with someone. Every time you cried, yelled, felt like punching someone.

It didn't happen when you were feeling easy-breezy and beautiful, did it?

No. It likely happened when you were feeling triggered: sad, angry, ashamed, tired, belittled, ....

DISTRESSED.

The same is true for kids.

When a kid lashes out - when they don't want to eat their vegetable or clean their room or share their toys with their sibling - it's because they're distressed.

Getting mad, threatening to punish, or even ignoring, isn't going to resolve the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that are underlying the child's behavior.

What can help?

STEP 1: PAUSE. TAKE A BREATH.

Our instinct is to react from that place of frustration, anger, shame, exhaustion, etc that we're feeling in response to their behavior. It triggers us. But reacting from that energy isn't going to solve anything quickly.

STEP 2: SHINE YOUR LIGHT.

At some point in your life, you've felt what that child is feeling. Thought what that child is thinking.

Shine your light means to help the child to see more clearly what's going on underneath.

Give them the words to express the emotion: You seem frustrated (or sad, angry...)

Then ask them to share:

"Tell me more."

And watch what happens!

Tomorrow's my birthday. I'm going to be 44. Tomorrow's my birthday. I'm going to be 44.

Having a January birthday means that, on top of the general reflections that come with the New Year, I also spend time reflecting on my last trip around the sun.

What I realized is that so much of it cannot be measured with checkboxes.

Degrees, bank account size, numbers on a scale... none of those tangible goals have ever sustained my satisfaction levels for long.

What has sustained me is connecting to my values.

Making strong deep connections with others. Especially my children.

Letting my heart's desires be spoken out-loud and giving my brain permission to rest.

Learning to trust my decision-making strategy, even if the decisions that needed to be made weren't always easy or comfortable.

Stepping back so I could look at all the pieces to see how they fit. Instead of trying to force the square pegs into the round holes.

Did it feel good every day? Hell, no!
Does my life look different on paper? Not really.

But, inside, I FEEL different.

I notice the uncomfortable feelings flow through more quickly.

I sense a lightness that comes from releasing a whole lot of old stories and pain that were no longer serving me.

Last year, I signed up for a training with @sadienardiniofficial to expand my yoga teacher's toolbox. And, while I'm taking my sweet, slow time going through all the materials, it has never been more clear to me how far I've come.

Who I've BEcome.

AND IT FEELS SO GOOD!!

Happy New Year! I'm full of hope and excite Happy New Year!

I'm full of hope and excitement for all the magic that this year may bring. But, I also know that opening a new calendar doesn't instantaneously cure all the unhealed wounds that so many of us are carrying forward from 2020.

This is why it makes me sad to see that, we're only on the 5th day of 2021 but, already, I'm seeing so many posts about how this year isn't going the way people expected.

PATIENCE.

2020 was a rough year. It was a perfect storm and we were battered by waves of a pandemic, climate crisis, and political unrest converging on us with mighty force.

But, remember when you first learned to ride a bike?

Or watched your child learn to walk?

Those things weren't learned overnight.

Or had your heart broken in a breakup or when you lost a dear loved one?

Wounds don't heal on a specific timetable.

Life is a journey, moments strung together into a dance, a flow. Driven by cycles that we do not control.

And, sometimes that means progress happens in giant leaps. Sometimes, in tiny steps.

You learned to walk, to ride a bike, to heal from grief.

One day at a time, one breath at a time, one small step at a time.

Trusting that each step, breath, day brings experience and knowledge that will help you flow into the next step, breath, day.

That's why I'm focusing on entering this year, not only with HOPE and JOY, but also with TRUST and SURRENDER.

Because, just as the butterfly takes its time to emerge out of the cocoon - a process that cannot be sped up without causing harm to the insect - trust and surrender lead to flight!

This message came to me in a morning meditation:

Here's to a 2021 filled with love and tears,
joys and fears,
ups and downs,
as the Earth spins 'round.

Here's to your strength and resilience,
Showing the world your brilliance.

Through patience and belief
You'll find relief.

With surrender and trust
You'll experiment, review, adjust

Hold on tight
You're learning to take flight
With light and love, peace and joy. Merry Christ With light and love, peace and joy.

Merry Christmas.
Because of the Earth's tilt, our sun's cycle is li Because of the Earth's tilt, our sun's cycle is like a giant pendulum, swinging through the seasons.

On the solstice, the pendulum reaches it's furtherest point from the center. And, just before it starts its movement back towards the opposite direction, it pauses.

Today is a perfect day to pause, to go slow. Breath, enjoy the moment, and reflect.

My kids are 13 and 9 and we've really enjoyed resting today. We also took some time to reflect and talk about these 3 questions:

What are the silver linings of 2020?
What am I proud of myself for having done this year?
What am I ready to leave behind going into 2021?

And bonus question: what am I excited to create in 2021?

Need to adapt these questions for younger kids but not really sure how? Drop me a DM. I've used similar questions with my 3-6 year old students and have loads of ideas to help you!

Would love to hear what comes up for you!

No one likes to be controlled.

Once I committed to getting curious about why I felt the need to be "in charge" and learned how to communicate more effectively, I was able to rewrite so many stories that have not only helped me heal my own emotional wounds but have allowed us to create so much more ease, joy, and connection together as a family.! ❤️

One of the lightbulb moments I've had in 2020 came One of the lightbulb moments I've had in 2020 came from a post I saw here. (Unfortunately, I can't remember who posted it originally!)

But, the post was about what it takes to truly be a #mindfulfamily.

Because, practicing mindfulness alone is not enough.

You actually need three parts:

1) Being a mindful parent. Taking care of myself is vital for being the best me I can on a mental 🧠, emotional 🤗, and physical 💪 level.

2) Empowering mindful children. 🧘‍♂️ I can role model the behaviors but they have to SEE me to learn from me. I can't just practice when they're at school or in the other room.

And, I can give them a toolbox but they get to decide which tools and practices they want to implement based on their developmental ages and personalities.

As I watch my kids, I'm learning so much from them! It's part of why I love teaching kids too.

Children are amazing teachers and love to lead. As adults, we sometimes forget how wise these little people can be.

And that brings me to
3) mindful parenting.

Because as much as I do the work on myself and watch my kids learn and grow their own practices, we all still have to interact together as a family.

Which requires communicating. 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Communicating with each of them individually to learn about who they are and how they are changing.

Communicating with my husband to make sure we're on the same page and providing consistent boundaries and rules so that our children learn to feel safe, confident, resilient, and trusting.

And the 4 of us talking AND listening to each other.

Putting those three things together we've become a more mindful family and life, even in this crazy-pants of a year, has become more calm, easy, and connected. 🙏

I'm curious, does this resonate with you?
Happy Hanukkah! In our house we go big with the ca Happy Hanukkah! In our house we go big with the candle lighting!

(Full disclosure: Thanks to the time-warp that is 2020, I had to be reminded what day of the week it was!)

As we turned the page to December on the calendar this week, I've been thinking a lot about how crazy it is that 2020 is almost over.

This is not the year I had expected when it began.

There has been a lot of disappointment, loss, frustration. There were days that felt absolutely unbearable!

And, then there were days that were magical. Filled with laughter and love and flow.

There are many silver linings that have shown through this year that may not have otherwise presented themselves.

I took time to sit with a cup of tea, some relaxing music, and a notebook and jotted the list down. Here are some highlights:

+ I spent more time going deep into healing long-held wounds and, as a result, felt so much more present with my children.

+ I made new friends through social media and connected more and deeper with old friends and family.

+ I got clarity on the next steps for my business and joined an incredible sisterhood of beautifully empowering and badass women.

And so much more!

How about you? What beauty you have found during this tumultuous and chaotic ride on the coronacoaster?

What can I celebrate with you this week?

Trust is one of the very first things we learn as Trust is one of the very first things we learn as an infant. Do you trust your parent/caregiver to change you, feed you, soothe you when you cry?

And, then we start school and there are other adults we have to learn to trust. Caregivers who are trying to fulfill the needs of 25-30 other children at the same time. It's so easy for them to miss filling a need of yours.

And don't forget about the other kids. All trying to navigate trust and setting boundaries. And acting impulsively and immaturely because kids' brains are impulsive and immature.

All while kids are also learning how and when to trust themselves. Remember the "I can do it myself!" phase?

And through it all, we learn. And scars form.

And then, we grow into adults. And have children. And they go through the same process.

And, if we're still hurting as parents, we create an environment where our children develop similar defenses.

But we can break the pattern. We can learn to gain confidence in ourselves, to ask for support and believe that we deserve to receive it.

We can learn to see the toxic people as characters in our story but we get to choose whether to give big or small parts to them.

It's not easy work to implement. It's not quick work either.

But the tools aren't rocket science. And, implementing them allows you to create changes in yourself that will pass down to future generations.

The rewards are greater than words can describe.

Do you trust yourself? What's missing?

Can I help? DM me and let me know what's coming up for you.

HAPPY DECEMBER!! I'm really excited to shar HAPPY DECEMBER!!

I'm really excited to share this.

I have to be honest... I usually do a 24 Days of Yoga advent calendar but, this year, I was feeling HUGE resistance to putting it out.

I couldn't figure out why but then, my son came home from school on Friday and said that his class is learning Jingle Bell Rock.

And it hit me.

See, we live in France and, while it is illegal to teach religion in public schools, Christmas has become such a part of the culture that, even in English class, the vocabulary words they kids learn for their "winter" unit revolve around the holiday: Christmas tree, Santa Claus, Jingle Bell Rock.

As a Jewish girl growing up in NYC, the holiday vibe was always inclusive. Sure there were a lot of Christmas-themed decorations. But, there were also menorahs in almost every shop window and we learned Kwanzaa songs in music class and Bollywood dance moves to celebrate Diwali.

But, my boys don't get to experience that here as I'm sure many kids all over the world don't get to either.

Which is why I was having the resistance to put out my "winter-themed" yoga advent calendar.

In this day and age where it feels more important than ever to promote diversity and inclusion, this Jewish mom, married to a Christian man, did not want to put out something that felt disproportionately tied to one culture over another.

So, in the spirit of learning and sharing, I'm really excited about my updated WINTER YOGA page!

It's got yoga poses and mindfulness activities for Solstice, Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, plus a winter-themed PDF you can download. All for FREE.

COPY & PASTE THE LINK TO VIEW: https://marisaraymond.com/winter-holiday-yoga/

And, as I keep learning about winter celebrations from other cultures, I will add more in! (My husband is always asking about Festivus).

I hope you enjoy! And I'd love to hear some of your family's favorite holiday traditions. Share them below!

Happy December!
